The Railway Service

Ferrotramviaria currently operates on a territory of 1,400 km2, for a catchment area of approximately 700,000 inhabitants, moving on average about 14,000 travellers every day. The railway company operates thanks to a “Service Contract”, renewed until 2033, stipulated with the Puglia Region, which regulates the services offered, described below.

Bari-Barletta Railway: The service on the Bari-Fesca S. Girolamo-Bitonto-Barletta line was opened for operation in 1965 and connects Bari with important municipalities in the north of Bari: Bitonto, Terlizzi, Ruvo, Corato, Andria, Barletta and the Bari Palese district with two stops on the outskirts. It runs along a route of approximately 70 km on an electrified line, with a single track on the Bari-Fesca San Girolamo section, and a double track on the Fesca San Girolamo-Andria Sud section (approximately 52 km). The line is currently interrupted between Andria Sud and Barletta for infrastructure modernization and enhancement works. The service is guaranteed with replacement buses.

Bari - San Paolo District Railway: On 22 December 2008, the Bari Centrale-San Paolo District Metropolitan Railway was opened for operation, an important milestone for Ferrovie del Nord Barese in the field of Regional Local Public Transport. It was the first metropolitan railway line in Bari; in just 15 minutes it connects the city centre to the peripheral San Paolo district. The line is electrified. From Bari Centrale to Fesca San Girolamo it uses the single-track line of the Bari Barletta railway. From Fesca San Girolamo, a double-track route of 5.724 km develops along which there are five active stops: Tesoro, Cittadella, San Gabriele, Ospedale and the terminus station Cecilia, in the peripheral district of the municipality of Modugno.

Bari-Karol Wojtyla Airport Railway: On 19 July 2013, the railway link connecting the Bari-Palese Airport, both towards Bari Centrale and towards Bitonto, with the Bari-Barletta railway line was opened for operation. It is one of the most cutting-edge engineering works built in Puglia and Bari is one of the few cities in Italy to have a direct railway connection with the Airport, reachable in less than 20 minutes from the Central Station. The line, like the rest of the railway network, is electrified. From Bari Centrale to Fesca San Girolamo it uses the single-track line of the Bari Barletta railway. From Fesca San Girolamo, the new infrastructure develops on a double track, a route of 7.679 km along which there are two active stops: Europa, in the San Paolo district of Bari, and Aerostazione inside the Palese airport terminal, directly connected through a 300-meter tunnel to the "arrivals" area of the Civil Airport. When the interconnection works with the Italian Railway Network are completed in the RFI stations of Bari C.le and Barletta C.le thanks to the "Great Project" financed by the European Community, the Airport will be accessible from all the cities of Puglia and the neighboring regions.
